Why is it that solar panels are not transparent?

solar power systems

If you have ever wondered if the effectiveness of see-through solar panel is as good as those from conventional panels, you are not alone. This type of panel doesn't transmit as much light, and they cost more as a result. Let's find out why see-through solar panels are not the best choice for your home.

Transparent panels are less efficient than conventional solar panels

Due to their lower efficiency, transparent solar panels are less efficient than traditional panels. These panels don't have a high thermal mass so they need to be exposed to sunlight. This can make them inefficient, but their large-scale deployment compensates. Because transparent panels are made from glass, they can be more fragile that conventional solar panels. This is why extra care must always be taken with them. These panels require different electronic devices in order to work properly.

These limitations aside, transparent solar panels have a lot of potential. The glass surfaces of buildings and skyscrapers are a great place to capture sunlight. Transparent solar cells, says Richard Lunt, Johansen Crosby Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University. They are the future of solar panel technologies.

They transmit less light

Unlike conventional solar panels, see thru solar panels transmit less light. This is because regular thin-film panels are made of opaque metal. The solar cells are therefore able to trap more sunlight, which makes them more efficient. The process of creating a back electrode with the right properties is expensive.

They are also more expensive

Transparent solar panels are more costly because the cells that make them are transparent. You will therefore need to use more cells and glasses. However, the panels themselves are not that expensive. The cost of installing them will depend on the type of glass used and the PV coating applied. If done correctly, panels will produce the exact same power as rooftop solar cells.

Solar panel manufacturers need to create more efficient materials in order make them cheaper. They must also be tuned to match sunlight. This is to make sure they don't absorb more light than necessary. The new technology would enable solar panels to have a lower cost and be made from less material.
